The D-Link DMS-108P is a compact 8-port unmanaged Multi-Gigabit PoE switch designed for high-performance home, office, surveillance and wireless networking. All eight RJ45 ports support Ethernet speeds up to 2.5Gbps and can also deliver Power over Ethernet using IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at and 802.3bt PoE++.

With a substantial 230W total PoE power budget and support for up to 90W on an individual PoE port, the DMS-108P can power demanding network devices such as Wi-Fi access points, PTZ IP cameras, VoIP equipment, kiosks, smart lighting and other compatible powered devices directly through the Ethernet cable.

The switch provides a 40Gbps switching capacity and maximum packet-forwarding rate of 29.76 million packets per second, helping multiple 2.5GbE devices communicate simultaneously without a traditional 1GbE switch becoming the bottleneck.

Its unmanaged plug-and-play design means there is no complex switch configuration required. Features including IGMP Snooping, IEEE 802.1p Quality of Service, IEEE 802.3x Flow Control, automatic speed negotiation, Auto MDI/MDIX and Energy-Efficient Ethernet operate automatically to optimise connectivity and network efficiency.

Quick answer: The D-Link DMS-108P/B is an 8-port unmanaged 2.5GbE PoE++ switch. Eight 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet Ports

The DMS-108P provides eight Multi-Gigabit RJ45 Ethernet ports.

Each port automatically supports:

  • 10Mbps Ethernet
  • 100Mbps Fast Ethernet
  • 1Gbps Gigabit Ethernet
  • 2.5Gbps / 2.5GBASE-T Ethernet

This allows older Gigabit devices and newer 2.5GbE equipment to be connected to the same switch.

2.5× the Bandwidth of Gigabit Ethernet

A 2.5GbE connection provides a theoretical link rate of up to:

2.5Gbps

compared with 1Gbps on standard Gigabit Ethernet.

This makes 2.5GbE particularly useful for:

  • Wi-Fi 6 access points
  • High-speed network storage
  • NAS systems
  • Workstations
  • Gaming PCs
  • High-resolution surveillance systems
  • Large file transfers
  • Media production
  • 4K / 8K video workflows

Every Port Supports 2.5GbE

The DMS-108P does not reserve 2.5Gbps performance for only one or two uplink ports.

All eight RJ45 interfaces support 2.5GBASE-T operation.

This means a network can connect multiple Multi-Gigabit devices without forcing most of them back to a 1Gbps switch port.

No Dedicated Uplink Port Required

The switch does not require a special dedicated copper uplink.

Any appropriate RJ45 port can be connected to a router, gateway, another switch or network infrastructure device.

If one of the eight ports is used as an uplink, seven physical RJ45 ports remain available for other devices.

40Gbps Switching Capacity

D-Link specifies a total switching capacity of:

40Gbps

This figure represents the switch's aggregate switching fabric capacity rather than the speed of one Ethernet port.

40Gbps Does Not Mean One Port Runs at 40Gbps

Each individual Ethernet port supports up to 2.5Gbps.

The 40Gbps figure reflects the aggregate full-duplex switching capacity:

8 ports × 2.5Gbps × 2 directions = 40Gbps

This distinction is important because describing a single connection as 40Gbps would be incorrect.

29.76Mpps Packet Forwarding

The DMS-108P supports a maximum forwarding rate of:

29.76 million packets per second / Mpps

This helps the switch process large volumes of network traffic across multiple active ports.

Power over Ethernet on All Eight Ports

Every network port on the DMS-108P is PoE capable.

D-Link specifies:

PoE-enabled ports: Ports 1–8

This means compatible network devices can receive both data and electrical power through the same Ethernet connection.

Why PoE Is Useful

Power over Ethernet can reduce installation complexity because supported devices do not require a separate mains power adapter at their installation location.

This is particularly useful for equipment mounted:

  • On ceilings
  • High on walls
  • In corridors
  • Outside convenient socket locations
  • In security-camera positions
  • In network installations with centralised backup power

IEEE 802.3af PoE Support

The DMS-108P supports the established IEEE 802.3af PoE standard.

This allows it to power many lower-power compatible network devices such as:

  • VoIP phones
  • Basic wireless access points
  • IP cameras
  • Network sensors

IEEE 802.3at PoE+ Support

The switch also supports IEEE 802.3at PoE+, providing compatibility with devices that require more power than standard 802.3af equipment.

Typical PoE+ devices can include:

  • Higher-performance wireless access points
  • Advanced IP cameras
  • Video phones
  • Network terminals

IEEE 802.3bt PoE++ Support

For demanding powered devices, the DMS-108P additionally supports:

IEEE 802.3bt PoE++

D-Link specifies that an individual port can provide up to:

90W maximum

to an appropriately compatible powered device, subject to the switch's overall 230W power budget.

Useful for High-Power Network Devices

D-Link identifies applications including:

  • High-performance Wi-Fi access points
  • PTZ surveillance cameras
  • Kiosks
  • Smart LED lighting
  • Other compatible high-power PoE devices

230W Total PoE Power Budget

The DMS-108P has a total available PoE power budget of:

230W

This is the combined amount of PoE power available across the eight PoE-enabled ports.

90W per Port Does Not Mean 720W Total

Although an individual port can support up to 90W, the total switch budget remains 230W.

It therefore cannot simultaneously provide 90W to all eight ports.

For example, the combined PoE requirements of all connected devices must remain within the available 230W total power budget.

Example PoE Deployment

A possible installation could combine devices such as:

  • Several Wi-Fi access points
  • Multiple PoE security cameras
  • VoIP phones
  • One higher-power PTZ camera

provided the total negotiated PoE requirement remains within 230W.

Automatic PoE Compatibility

Because the DMS-108P supports IEEE-standard PoE, compatible powered devices negotiate their supported power requirements with the switch.

This allows a mixture of:

  • 802.3af devices
  • 802.3at devices
  • 802.3bt devices

to share the same switch, subject to the total PoE power budget.

Ideal for Wi-Fi 6 Access Points

D-Link specifically positions the DMS-108P as an effective Multi-Gigabit backhaul switch for Wi-Fi 6.

Modern wireless access points can deliver aggregate wireless throughput greater than 1Gbps, meaning a traditional Gigabit Ethernet uplink can become a wired bottleneck.

A 2.5GbE connection can provide additional wired backhaul capacity while PoE simultaneously powers the access point.

One Cable for Data and Power

For a compatible PoE access point, a single Ethernet cable can carry:

  • Network data
  • PoE electrical power

This can simplify ceiling or wall-mounted access-point deployment.

Ideal for Multi-Gigabit Surveillance Networks

The DMS-108P can also suit IP surveillance installations requiring a combination of PoE and higher network bandwidth.

Possible connected devices include:

  • Fixed IP cameras
  • PTZ cameras
  • High-resolution cameras
  • PoE NVR-related network equipment

D-Link specifically highlights HD surveillance as one of the applications for the switch.

High PoE Budget for PTZ Cameras

PTZ cameras can require more power than basic fixed cameras because they may include:

  • Pan motors
  • Tilt motors
  • Optical zoom mechanisms
  • Infrared illumination
  • Heaters
  • Other environmental features

The switch's 802.3bt capability can therefore be valuable for compatible high-power surveillance equipment.

Ideal for NAS and High-Speed File Transfers

The 2.5GbE ports can also improve local file-transfer performance when connected to suitable:

  • NAS systems
  • Servers
  • Desktop PCs
  • Workstations
  • 2.5GbE USB adapters

A 2.5GbE connection can provide significantly more network bandwidth than Gigabit Ethernet, provided both devices and the storage system can sustain the required throughput.

Plug-and-Play Unmanaged Switch

The DMS-108P is an unmanaged Ethernet switch.

This means it is designed to work without requiring complicated switch configuration.

Simple Setup

Typical installation consists of:

  • Connecting the supplied power system
  • Connecting the router or upstream network
  • Connecting Ethernet devices
  • Allowing each port to negotiate speed automatically

No routine managed-switch configuration is required for basic operation.

What Does Unmanaged Mean?

An unmanaged switch is intended for users who want straightforward network expansion without needing advanced administrator-controlled switch configuration.

The DMS-108P still incorporates automatic networking features such as:

  • QoS
  • IGMP Snooping
  • Flow Control
  • Auto-negotiation
  • Automatic MAC learning
  • Energy-Efficient Ethernet

but they operate without requiring the user to configure a complex management interface.

When to Choose a Managed Switch Instead

A managed or smart-managed switch may be more appropriate if your network specifically requires administrator-controlled features such as:

  • Advanced VLAN configuration
  • Per-port configuration
  • Detailed traffic monitoring
  • Advanced access control
  • Managed link aggregation
  • Centralised switch-management features

IGMP Snooping

The DMS-108P includes IGMP Snooping to help optimise multicast network traffic.

Without multicast optimisation, some multicast streams can be forwarded unnecessarily to ports that do not require them.

Useful for Multicast Applications

IGMP Snooping can help improve efficiency for services such as:

  • IPTV
  • Multicast video
  • Surveillance streams
  • Other multicast applications

D-Link states that IGMP Snooping intelligently directs multicast traffic to the devices that need it, helping reduce unnecessary network flooding.

IGMP Snooping Is Not an IP Routing Protocol

The DMS-108P is a Layer-2 unmanaged switch.

IGMP Snooping is a multicast traffic-optimisation feature and should not be described as IP routing capability.

IEEE 802.1p Quality of Service

The switch supports IEEE 802.1p QoS.

D-Link's datasheet states that traffic can be classified into:

8 priority levels

helping higher-priority or time-sensitive traffic receive appropriate treatment.

Useful for Voice and Video Traffic

QoS can be beneficial for network applications such as:

  • VoIP calls
  • Video conferencing
  • Video streaming
  • IPTV
  • Other latency-sensitive traffic

IEEE 802.3x Flow Control

The DMS-108P supports IEEE 802.3x Flow Control.

When a receiving buffer becomes full, flow control can temporarily pause transmission to help reduce dropped packets and maintain a more reliable connection.

1MB Packet Buffer

D-Link specifies a packet buffer of:

1MB

The buffer temporarily stores Ethernet frames during periods of traffic congestion or when data arrives faster than an outgoing link can immediately transmit it.

4K MAC Address Table

The switch supports a MAC address table containing up to:

4,000 entries

MAC addresses are learned automatically so the switch can direct Ethernet traffic to the correct physical port.

Automatic MAC Address Learning

The DMS-108P automatically learns connected device MAC addresses and updates its forwarding table without manual configuration.

Store-and-Forward Switching

D-Link specifies a store-and-forward transmission method.

This conventional Ethernet switching method receives a complete frame before forwarding it to the destination port.

Auto MDI/MDIX on Every Port

Every port supports automatic MDI/MDIX crossover detection.

This means users do not normally need to choose between straight-through and crossover Ethernet cables when connecting:

  • Computers
  • Routers
  • Switches
  • Servers
  • Access points
  • Other Ethernet devices

Automatic Link Speed Negotiation

Each port automatically detects the connection speed supported by the attached network device.

A mixture of:

  • 10Mbps
  • 100Mbps
  • 1Gbps
  • 2.5Gbps

devices can therefore be connected at the same time.

Upgrade from Gigabit Without Moving to 10GbE

2.5GBASE-T provides a useful middle ground between standard Gigabit Ethernet and more expensive 10GbE infrastructure.

D-Link specifically highlights that Multi-Gigabit Ethernet can help increase network speed without necessarily replacing existing compatible copper infrastructure.

Existing Cabling May Be Reusable

In suitable installations, 2.5GBASE-T can operate over compatible existing Ethernet cabling.

Actual achievable link speed depends on:

  • Cable category
  • Cable quality
  • Run length
  • Termination quality
  • Network adapter capability
  • Environmental interference

Fanless Silent Operation

The DMS-108P uses a fanless cooling design.

This means there is no internal cooling fan generating continuous mechanical noise.

Ideal for Noise-Sensitive Locations

Fanless operation can make the switch suitable for:

  • Home offices
  • Small offices
  • Desks
  • Meeting rooms
  • Studios
  • Quiet workspaces
  • Living areas

No Cooling Fan to Wear Out

Removing a mechanical fan also eliminates one moving component from the switch, which can help simplify long-term operation and maintenance.

Durable Metal Housing

D-Link uses a metal enclosure rather than a lightweight plastic shell.

The metal chassis helps provide:

  • Physical durability
  • Passive heat dissipation
  • Protection for the networking electronics
  • A compact professional desktop design

Energy-Efficient Ethernet

The DMS-108P supports IEEE 802.3az Energy-Efficient Ethernet / EEE.

D-Link states that this technology reduces switch power consumption when network utilisation is low.

Link Status Detection

D-Link Green technology can also detect when an Ethernet link is inactive.

When a connected device is shut down or disconnected, the switch can reduce power use on the inactive network connection.

External Power Supply

Because of the high 230W PoE budget, the DMS-108P uses an external power supply.

D-Link specifies the switch power input as:

54V / 4.62A

Maximum Power Consumption

D-Link's official datasheet lists maximum total power consumption of:

261.02W

This figure represents maximum switch power consumption under the manufacturer's specified operating conditions and should not be confused with the 230W PoE output budget.

230W PoE Budget vs 261.02W Input Consumption

The figures describe different things:

  • 230W: maximum total PoE power budget available to powered devices
  • 261.02W: D-Link's listed maximum total switch power consumption

Compact Desktop Dimensions

Despite the high PoE budget, the DMS-108P has a compact desktop enclosure measuring:

  • Width: 190mm
  • Depth: 120mm
  • Height: 38mm

Overall dimensions:

190 × 120 × 38mm

753g Metal Chassis

D-Link specifies a switch weight of approximately:

0.753kg / 753g

Front Status LEDs

The switch includes status indicators for:

  • System power
  • Link / activity per Ethernet port
  • PoE status per port

These indicators make it easier to check basic network and power status without connecting to a management interface.

Operating Temperature

D-Link specifies an operating temperature range of:

0°C to 40°C

Storage Temperature

The specified storage temperature range is:

-10°C to 70°C

Operating Humidity

The switch is specified for:

  • Operating humidity: 10% to 90% RH
  • Storage humidity: 5% to 90% RH

Designed for SOHO Networks

D-Link specifically positions the DMS-108P for Small Office / Home Office / SOHO networking.

It can be particularly useful where a network needs both:

  • Multi-Gigabit performance
  • A substantial PoE power budget

without requiring a fully managed enterprise switch.

Suitable for Small Business Networks

Potential small-business installations include:

  • Offices
  • Retail premises
  • Studios
  • Small warehouses
  • Training rooms
  • Professional home offices
  • Surveillance installations

Suitable for High-Speed Home Networks

Home users can also use the DMS-108P to connect a mixture of:

  • Gaming PCs
  • NAS devices
  • 2.5GbE computers
  • Wireless access points
  • PoE cameras
  • Media systems

The fanless design is especially useful where the switch will be located inside a home office or living environment.

DMS-108P vs DMS-108

The model name is similar to D-Link's DMS-108, but the two products are not identical.

DMS-108P

  • 8 × 2.5GbE ports
  • PoE on all eight ports
  • 802.3af / at / bt
  • Up to 90W per PoE port
  • 230W total PoE budget
  • 40Gbps switching capacity
  • Fanless

DMS-108

  • 8 × 2.5GbE ports
  • No integrated PoE power delivery
  • 40Gbps switching capacity
  • Fanless

If powered network devices are required, the DMS-108P is the appropriate PoE-equipped version.

Does the DMS-108P Have 10GbE Ports?

No.

The highest Ethernet link rate supported by each RJ45 port is:

2.5Gbps

The 40Gbps switching-capacity figure should not be confused with a 10GbE or 40GbE physical port.

Does the DMS-108P Have SFP or SFP+?

D-Link's official interface specification lists:

8 × copper 10/100/1000/2.5G PoE Ethernet ports.

No separate SFP or SFP+ fibre interface is listed for the DMS-108P.

Does the DMS-108P Need Configuration?

No complex setup is required for normal switching operation.

It is an unmanaged plug-and-play switch, so users can connect compatible devices and allow the switch to negotiate their Ethernet speeds automatically.

Can All Eight Ports Supply PoE?

Yes.

D-Link specifically lists:

PoE-enabled ports: 1 to 8.

All eight physical network connections can therefore power compatible IEEE PoE devices.

Can Every Port Supply 90W at the Same Time?

No.

The maximum on one compatible port is 90W, but the total PoE budget across the switch is 230W.

The total power requirements of all connected PoE devices must stay within that budget.

Can It Power PoE, PoE+ and PoE++ Devices?

Yes, where the powered device follows the supported IEEE standards.

The DMS-108P supports:

  • IEEE 802.3af PoE
  • IEEE 802.3at PoE+
  • IEEE 802.3bt PoE++

Important 40Gbps Switching Capacity Note

The DMS-108P has a 40Gbps aggregate switching capacity.

This does not mean an individual port operates at 40Gbps.

Each physical Ethernet port supports a maximum negotiated link speed of 2.5Gbps.

Important PoE Budget Note

The switch supports up to 90W on an individual IEEE 802.3bt-compatible port, but the maximum combined PoE budget is 230W.

Always calculate the power requirements of all connected PoE devices before installation.

Important PoE Device Compatibility Note

A powered network device should support an appropriate IEEE PoE standard:

  • 802.3af
  • 802.3at
  • 802.3bt

Do not assume that proprietary or non-standard passive PoE equipment is compatible simply because it uses an Ethernet connector.

Important 2.5GbE Performance Note

To achieve a 2.5Gbps Ethernet link, both ends of the connection must support 2.5GbE.

If a connected device supports only 1GbE, the switch automatically negotiates the lower supported link speed.

Important Cable Note

Actual 2.5GbE link performance depends on the quality, category, length and installation condition of the Ethernet cabling.

The switch cannot correct faults caused by damaged, poorly terminated or unsuitable network cabling.

Important Unmanaged Switch Note

The DMS-108P is designed for straightforward plug-and-play networking.

Users requiring advanced administrator-controlled switching features should consider a suitable smart-managed or managed D-Link switch instead.

Important IGMP Note

IGMP Snooping is included to optimise multicast traffic.

It should not be interpreted as Layer-3 IP routing functionality.

Important Fanless Operation Note

The DMS-108P contains no active cooling fan.

Ensure adequate ventilation around the metal enclosure and avoid blocking its ventilation openings, particularly when the switch is providing substantial PoE power.

Important Power Consumption Note

D-Link lists:

  • PoE power budget: 230W
  • Maximum system power consumption: 261.02W

These values are not interchangeable.

Important Product Identification Note

The UK retail version on this page is:

  • D-Link model: DMS-108P
  • UK MPN: DMS-108P/B
  • Memox SKU: 11889655
  • UPC-12: 790069477980
  • EAN / GTIN-13: 0790069477980

Do not confuse the DMS-108P/B with the non-PoE DMS-108.

Who Is the D-Link DMS-108P Best For?

  • Small businesses
  • Home offices
  • Wi-Fi 6 access-point installations
  • Multi-Gigabit wireless networks
  • PoE surveillance systems

  • 2.5GbE desktops and workstations
  • Users upgrading from Gigabit Ethernet
  • Networks needing both 2.5GbE and PoE++
  • Quiet offices requiring a fanless switch
  • Users wanting plug-and-play installation

Who Should Consider a Different Switch?

A different switch may be more appropriate if you specifically require:

  • 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports
  • SFP or SFP+ fibre uplinks
  • More than eight Ethernet ports
  • More than 230W total PoE capacity
  • 90W simultaneously on all eight ports
  • Advanced managed-switch configuration
  • Detailed per-port administrator controls
  • Advanced VLAN management
  • Enterprise switch stacking

Why Choose the D-Link DMS-108P?

The D-Link DMS-108P combines three features that are often required together in a modern small-business network: 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet, high-power PoE++ and simple unmanaged operation.

All eight ports support 2.5GbE rather than limiting Multi-Gigabit connectivity to one uplink. This makes it possible to connect multiple access points, workstations, NAS devices, cameras and other high-speed network devices without pushing them through conventional 1Gbps ports.

Every port also supports IEEE-standard PoE, including 802.3bt PoE++ with up to 90W available on an individual compatible port. The large 230W combined power budget makes the switch suitable for more demanding PoE installations than many compact desktop switches.

A 40Gbps switching fabric and 29.76Mpps forwarding rate provide the internal capacity needed for high-bandwidth Multi-Gigabit traffic, while the 4K MAC table, 1MB packet buffer and store-and-forward architecture handle normal Ethernet switching automatically.

Built-in IGMP Snooping helps manage multicast streams, 802.1p QoS prioritises important traffic, and 802.3x Flow Control helps reduce dropped packets during congestion.

The DMS-108P is also simple to deploy. Auto-negotiation automatically selects between 10Mbps, 100Mbps, 1Gbps and 2.5Gbps, while Auto MDI/MDIX eliminates the need to select special crossover Ethernet cables.

Its fanless metal chassis provides completely silent operation, while IEEE 802.3az Energy-Efficient Ethernet and D-Link Green technology help reduce unnecessary power consumption when links are inactive or lightly used.

Choose the D-Link DMS-108P if you need eight 2.5GbE ports, PoE on every port, up to 90W PoE++ for demanding devices, a 230W total PoE budget and silent plug-and-play operation in one compact metal switch.

Important 2.5GbE Port Speed Note

Each individual RJ45 port supports a maximum negotiated Ethernet link speed of:

2.5Gbps.

The switch does not provide a 40Gbps Ethernet port.

Important 40Gbps Switching Capacity Note

The manufacturer-specified 40Gbps figure is the switch's aggregate full-duplex switching capacity.

It is calculated from eight 2.5Gbps interfaces operating in both transmit and receive directions:

8 × 2.5Gbps × 2 = 40Gbps.

This should not be displayed as the maximum data rate of an individual network port.

Important PoE Budget Note

D-Link officially specifies:

  • Total PoE budget: 230W
  • Maximum on one compatible PoE port: 90W
  • PoE-enabled ports: Ports 1–8

The 90W specification does not mean the switch can supply 90W to all eight ports simultaneously.

The total combined PoE draw of all connected devices must remain within the switch's 230W power budget.

Important 230W vs 290W PoE Budget Note

Some third-party reseller databases currently list a 290W PoE budget for DMS-108P/B.

This is inconsistent with D-Link's current product page and official A1 datasheet.

The correct manufacturer specification is:

230W total PoE power budget.

Important PoE Standard Note

The DMS-108P supports IEEE-standard:

  • 802.3af PoE
  • 802.3at PoE+
  • 802.3bt PoE++

Compatibility should not be assumed for proprietary passive-PoE equipment simply because it uses an RJ45 connection.

Important IGMP Note

The DMS-108P includes IGMP Snooping.

This feature analyses multicast group membership and helps forward multicast traffic only towards ports where it is required.

It is not a routing protocol and the DMS-108P should not be described as an IP router.

Important Unmanaged Switch Note

The DMS-108P is an unmanaged plug-and-play switch.

Features such as QoS, IGMP Snooping, Flow Control, Auto MDI/MDIX, MAC learning and Energy-Efficient Ethernet operate automatically without a conventional administrator management interface.

Important QoS Note

D-Link specifies IEEE 802.1p Quality of Service with eight priority levels.

This is automatic traffic prioritisation and should not be confused with the extensive administrator-controlled QoS configuration available on a managed switch.

Important 2.5GbE Compatibility Note

To establish a 2.5Gbps Ethernet link, the connected device must also support 2.5GbE.

A device limited to 1GbE will automatically negotiate at 1Gbps rather than 2.5Gbps.

Important Cable Note

Actual Ethernet performance depends on the complete network installation, including:

  • Network adapter capability
  • Ethernet cable category
  • Cable quality
  • Cable length
  • Connector quality
  • Upstream network equipment
  • Storage performance

D-Link notes that real-world performance can vary according to cabling, network configuration, device compatibility and environmental conditions.

Important Fanless Cooling Note

The DMS-108P uses passive fanless cooling.

Allow adequate airflow around the metal enclosure and do not obstruct ventilation openings, particularly when the switch is supplying a substantial PoE load.

Important Maximum Power Consumption Note

D-Link's official A1 datasheet lists:

  • Maximum power consumption: 261.02W
  • Total PoE power budget: 230W
  • DC power specification: 54V / 4.62A

Maximum system consumption and available PoE output are separate specifications and should not be presented as the same value.

Important MTBF Note

D-Link lists a calculated MTBF figure of:

140,688,261 hours.

MTBF is a statistical reliability calculation and should not be interpreted as a guarantee that an individual switch will operate for that literal number of hours.

Important DMS-108 vs DMS-108P Note

This product is the DMS-108P PoE version.

Do not mix its specifications with the separate DMS-108, which also provides eight 2.5GbE ports but does not provide the DMS-108P's eight-port PoE / PoE+ / PoE++ functionality and 230W PoE budget.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

D-Link DMS-108P 8-Port 2.5G PoE++ Switch FAQ

The D-Link DMS-108P is an 8-port unmanaged Multi-Gigabit Ethernet switch designed for high-speed home, SOHO and small-business networks. All eight RJ45 ports support 10/100Mbps, 1Gbps and 2.5Gbps Ethernet and can provide standards-based PoE, PoE+ or PoE++ power to compatible devices.

With a 230W total PoE budget, up to 90W PoE++ per port, 40Gbps switching capacity and fanless metal construction, the DMS-108P is particularly suitable for Wi-Fi 6/6E/7 access points, PTZ cameras, IP surveillance, NAS systems and other high-bandwidth network devices. Below are answers to the most common questions buyers ask about 2.5GbE performance, PoE power, cabling, unmanaged networking, VLANs, NAS transfers, Wi-Fi access points and the differences between the DMS-108P and other D-Link switches.

1. What is the D-Link DMS-108P?

The D-Link DMS-108P is an 8-port unmanaged 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet PoE switch. It combines Multi-Gigabit networking with high-power IEEE 802.3af/at/bt PoE support, allowing network data and electrical power to be delivered over the same Ethernet cable to compatible devices.

2. What is the exact D-Link model, SKU and UPC sold by Memox?

This product is the D-Link DMS-108P/B. The Memox SKU is 11889655 and the UPC is 790069477980. D-Link identifies the core switch model as DMS-108P.

3. What are the main specifications of the DMS-108P?

Key specifications include 8 × 10/100/1000/2.5GBASE-T Ethernet ports, IEEE 802.3af/at/bt PoE, up to 90W PoE output per port, 230W total PoE budget, 40Gbps switching capacity, approximately 29.76Mpps forwarding rate, 4K MAC address table, 1MB packet buffer, IGMP Snooping, 802.1p QoS, 802.3x flow control and fanless metal construction.

4. What does unmanaged switch mean?

An unmanaged switch is designed for plug-and-play operation without a management interface. You connect the router, computers, access points, cameras or other network devices and the switch automatically forwards Ethernet traffic. There is no web dashboard required for normal setup.

5. Are all eight DMS-108P ports 2.5 Gigabit?

Yes. Every RJ45 port supports up to 2.5Gbps Ethernet. There is no group of slower Gigabit-only ports on this model.

6. Can I connect 100Mbps or 1Gbps devices to the DMS-108P?

Yes. Each port supports 10Mbps, 100Mbps, 1Gbps and 2.5Gbps operation and automatically negotiates the highest common speed supported by the connected device and cabling.

7. What does the 40Gbps switching capacity mean?

The 40Gbps switching capacity allows the switch to accommodate the combined full-duplex bandwidth of its eight 2.5Gbps ports. Each 2.5Gbps connection can transmit and receive simultaneously, so eight fully utilised ports represent up to 40Gbps of aggregate bidirectional switching bandwidth.

8. Does the DMS-108P have a dedicated uplink port?

No dedicated uplink is required. Any of the eight 2.5GbE ports can be connected to your router, firewall or another switch. Using one port as the uplink leaves seven ports available for other devices.

9. Does the DMS-108P have a 10GbE or SFP+ uplink?

No. All eight connections are RJ45 ports with a maximum negotiated speed of 2.5Gbps. There is no separate 5GbE, 10GbE or SFP+ uplink port.

10. Will the DMS-108P make my internet connection faster?

Only if another part of your network is currently the bottleneck. To exceed 1Gbps internet speeds, your ISP service, modem/router, router LAN port, Ethernet cabling and client device must all support more than 1Gbps. The DMS-108P cannot turn a 500Mbps or 1Gbps broadband connection into a faster service.

11. Can I benefit from 2.5GbE even if my internet is only 500Mbps or 1Gbps?

Yes. Local traffic does not need to travel through the internet. A 2.5GbE PC transferring files to a 2.5GbE NAS connected to the same switch can use the faster local link even when the broadband connection itself is much slower.

12. How fast can a 2.5GbE NAS transfer files through this switch?

2.5Gbps Ethernet has a theoretical raw data rate of approximately 312.5MB/s. Real file transfers are lower because of Ethernet, TCP/IP, file-system and protocol overhead and also depend on the speed of the NAS drives, computer and network adapters.

13. Is the DMS-108P suitable for Wi-Fi 6 access points?

Yes. D-Link specifically positions the DMS-108P for high-performance Wi-Fi 6 deployments. A 2.5GbE wired connection helps prevent a 1Gbps Ethernet uplink from becoming a bottleneck for capable wireless access points.

14. Can I use Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 access points with the DMS-108P?

Yes, provided the access point supports an Ethernet speed that can negotiate with 2.5GbE and accepts one of the supported IEEE PoE standards. Check the exact AP because some premium Wi-Fi 7 models use 5GbE or 10GbE interfaces and may therefore be limited to 2.5Gbps when connected to this switch.

15. Does the DMS-108P support Power over Ethernet?

Yes. It supports standards-based IEEE 802.3af PoE, 802.3at PoE+ and 802.3bt PoE++, allowing it to power a wide range of compatible network equipment directly through Ethernet.

16. Do all eight ports support PoE++?

Yes. D-Link specifies Ports 1–8 as PoE-capable, with support for IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at and 802.3bt devices.

17. What is the difference between PoE, PoE+ and PoE++?

IEEE 802.3af PoE is intended for relatively low-power devices, 802.3at PoE+ provides more power for equipment such as modern wireless access points and cameras, while 802.3bt PoE++ supports substantially higher-power devices such as advanced Wi-Fi access points, PTZ cameras and other powered network hardware.

18. What is the maximum PoE power from one DMS-108P port?

D-Link specifies up to 90W per PoE port under IEEE 802.3bt. The connected device must support the appropriate PoE standard, and its actual usable power can be lower because of PoE negotiation and cable losses.

19. What is the total PoE budget of the DMS-108P?

The maximum combined PoE power budget is 230W across all eight ports.

20. Can all eight ports provide 90W at the same time?

No. Although an individual port can provide up to 90W, the entire switch has a 230W power budget. Eight devices requesting 90W each would require 720W, far beyond the available budget.

21. How do I calculate whether my PoE devices fit within the 230W budget?

Add together the maximum PoE power requirement of every connected powered device. For example, four access points rated at 25W each would require approximately 100W, leaving substantial headroom. Two 90W devices would require up to 180W, leaving approximately 50W for the remaining ports.

22. Can the DMS-108P power eight PoE+ access points?

Potentially, but calculate the exact maximum consumption. Eight devices drawing 20W each require 160W and fit within the budget; eight drawing 25W require 200W. Eight devices capable of drawing the full 30W PoE+ PSE allowance could theoretically require 240W, which exceeds the switch's 230W total budget.

23. Can the DMS-108P power high-power PTZ cameras?

Yes, when the PTZ camera supports IEEE 802.3bt PoE++ and its power requirement stays within the 90W individual-port limit and the switch's remaining total PoE budget.

24. Is the DMS-108P good for IP surveillance cameras?

Yes. It can provide both network connectivity and power for compatible PoE cameras and supports IGMP Snooping, high PoE capacity and fanless operation. However, many ordinary IP cameras use only 100Mbps or 1Gbps Ethernet, so they may not individually benefit from 2.5GbE speed.

25. Do CCTV cameras actually need 2.5GbE?

Most individual surveillance cameras do not. Many cameras use only Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet and require far less than 1Gbps of bandwidth. The advantage of the DMS-108P is that it can combine those cameras with 2.5GbE access points, NAS devices and high-speed computers on the same switch.

26. Can I connect a non-PoE computer or NAS to a PoE port?

Yes. Standards-based IEEE PoE uses device detection and negotiation. A normal Ethernet device that does not request PoE can use the port for data without being intentionally supplied PoE power.

27. Does the DMS-108P support 24V or other passive PoE?

D-Link specifies IEEE 802.3af/at/bt standards-based PoE. It does not advertise passive 24V PoE output. Legacy devices requiring proprietary passive PoE may need their own compatible injector or converter.

28. Do I still need PoE injectors when using the DMS-108P?

Usually not for devices that support compatible IEEE PoE and remain within the 230W budget. Replacing multiple individual PoE injectors with one PoE switch is one of the main reasons buyers choose a product such as the DMS-108P.

29. Can I use Ubiquiti UniFi, TP-Link Omada or other third-party PoE devices?

Yes when the device uses compatible IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at or 802.3bt PoE and its Ethernet interface can negotiate with the switch. Brand matching is not required for standards-based Ethernet and PoE operation.

30. What happens if my connected PoE devices need more than 230W?

Do not design the installation to exceed the switch's stated 230W budget. Add the maximum power requirements before deployment and leave reasonable headroom. If your planned load is greater than 230W, use an additional PoE switch, injectors or a model with a larger power budget.

31. Does the DMS-108P include an external power supply?

The DMS-108P uses an external mains power supply. D-Link specifies the switch power input as approximately 54V DC through its supplied power system.

32. Can the DMS-108P itself be powered by PoE?

No. The DMS-108P is primarily a PoE power-sourcing switch rather than a PoE-powered switch. It requires its external power supply to provide the substantial 230W downstream PoE budget.

33. Is the DMS-108P fanless?

Yes. D-Link uses a completely fanless design, making it suitable for offices, studios, bedrooms and other areas where fan noise from networking equipment would be undesirable.

34. Is the DMS-108P completely silent?

There is no cooling fan, so there is no normal fan noise. As with most power electronics, extremely close-range electrical noise can vary between individual installations and power supplies, but the switch is designed by D-Link for silent fanless operation.

35. Is it normal for a fanless DMS-108P to feel warm?

Yes. The metal enclosure acts as part of the passive heat-dissipation system, so warmth can be normal—particularly when several PoE devices are drawing power. Leave adequate ventilation around the chassis and do not cover it with other equipment.

36. What are the dimensions and weight of the DMS-108P?

The switch measures approximately 190 × 120 × 38mm and weighs approximately 753g, excluding the external power supply.

37. Can the DMS-108P be installed in a network rack?

It is primarily a compact desktop switch rather than a standard 19-inch rackmount model. In a network cabinet it can be placed on a rack shelf. D-Link also markets the chassis for compact desktop/wall-type deployment rather than conventional rack-ear installation.

38. What Ethernet cable should I use for 2.5Gbps?

Good-quality Cat5e or better copper Ethernet cable is normally suitable for 2.5GBASE-T. For high-power PoE++ installations, good full-copper cabling and correctly terminated connectors are particularly important to minimise resistance, voltage drop and heat.

39. Can 2.5GbE work over my existing Cat5e cabling?

Often yes. One of the advantages of 2.5GBASE-T is that it was designed to provide multi-gigabit performance over much of the existing Cat5e infrastructure used for Gigabit Ethernet, avoiding the need to recable many homes and offices.

40. What is the maximum Ethernet cable distance?

Standard compliant 2.5GBASE-T networks are designed around Ethernet channel lengths up to approximately 100 metres with suitable cabling. Cable quality, connectors and high-power PoE requirements can affect real-world reliability, so poor-quality or CCA cable should be avoided.

41. Does the DMS-108P support VLAN configuration?

No user-configurable VLAN management is provided. This is an unmanaged switch. If you need to create port-based VLANs, assign access/trunk ports or control VLAN membership from the switch itself, choose a managed or smart-managed model instead.

42. Can the DMS-108P replace my router or firewall?

No. The DMS-108P is an Ethernet switch, not a router. Your router or firewall is still responsible for functions such as internet access, DHCP, NAT, firewalling and routing between different IP networks.

43. Does the DMS-108P have a web interface, app or IP address for configuration?

No normal switch-management interface is required. It is designed as an unmanaged plug-and-play device rather than a web-managed switch.

44. Does the DMS-108P support LACP or link aggregation?

D-Link does not list configurable LACP/link aggregation for the DMS-108P. If your NAS or server requires bonded Ethernet links managed by the switch, choose a suitable managed model.

45. Does the DMS-108P support port mirroring?

No configurable port-mirroring feature is listed for this unmanaged model. Port mirroring for packet capture, IDS or network troubleshooting generally requires a smart-managed or managed switch.

46. Does the DMS-108P support Spanning Tree Protocol?

D-Link does not list configurable STP/RSTP functions for this unmanaged switch. Avoid creating an Ethernet loop—for example by connecting two switch ports back into each other—because managed loop-prevention features should not be assumed.

47. What QoS features does the DMS-108P support?

The switch supports IEEE 802.1p Quality of Service. D-Link states that traffic can be classified into eight priority levels so time-sensitive traffic such as voice and video can receive appropriate forwarding priority. Because the switch is unmanaged, this is not the same as a fully configurable enterprise QoS system.

48. What does IGMP Snooping do on the DMS-108P?

IGMP Snooping helps the switch identify where multicast streams are actually required and avoids unnecessarily flooding that traffic to every port. This can improve efficiency for applications such as IPTV, multicast video and certain surveillance or streaming systems.

49. What does IEEE 802.3x flow control do?

Flow control can temporarily pause transmission when a receiving buffer becomes congested. D-Link uses it to help reduce packet loss and improve reliability when devices are sending data at different rates.

50. What is Energy-Efficient Ethernet on the DMS-108P?

The switch supports IEEE 802.3az Energy-Efficient Ethernet and D-Link Green technologies. These reduce unnecessary power consumption when network utilisation is low or when a port has no active link.

51. Is the DMS-108P good for gaming?

Yes for a wired network requiring 2.5GbE connectivity. It can provide low-latency Ethernet links between compatible PCs, routers and local servers. However, moving from 1GbE to 2.5GbE does not automatically reduce internet gaming latency if your broadband connection or game server is the limiting factor.

52. Is the DMS-108P suitable for 4K or 8K streaming?

Yes. D-Link specifically promotes the 2.5GbE platform for high-bandwidth applications including 4K/8K streaming. In practice, even Gigabit Ethernet is sufficient for most single compressed video streams, but 2.5GbE provides greater aggregate capacity when many devices or large local media files are involved.

53. Can I connect a 2.5GbE NAS, PCs and PoE access points to the same switch?

Yes. This is one of the strongest use cases for the DMS-108P. High-speed PCs and NAS devices can use 2.5GbE data links while the same switch powers compatible access points or cameras through PoE.

54. Can I connect another network switch to the DMS-108P?

Yes. Any 2.5GbE port can link to another compatible switch. Remember that traffic travelling between the two switches shares that single 2.5Gbps inter-switch link, so a 10GbE uplink may be preferable in larger networks with heavy simultaneous traffic.

55. D-Link DMS-108 vs DMS-108P – what is the difference?

Both models provide 8 × 2.5GbE ports and 40Gbps switching capacity. The major difference is PoE: the standard DMS-108 does not provide PoE, while the DMS-108P adds PoE/PoE+/PoE++ across all eight ports with a 230W total budget and up to 90W on one port. Choose the DMS-108 if you only need data connectivity; choose the DMS-108P when you also need to power access points, cameras or other PoE devices.

56. DMS-108P vs DMS-1100-10TP – which should I choose?

Choose the DMS-108P when you want simple plug-and-play 2.5GbE, fanless operation and high-power 802.3bt PoE++ up to 90W per port. Choose the DMS-1100-10TP when you need a smart-managed switch with VLANs, LACP, port mirroring, Spanning Tree and two 10Gb SFP+ uplinks. The DMS-1100-10TP's copper PoE ports use PoE/PoE+ rather than the DMS-108P's 90W PoE++ capability.

57. Is the lack of a 10Gb uplink a problem?

It depends on your network. For a home or small office where individual devices are mostly 1GbE or 2.5GbE, the DMS-108P can be an excellent fit. In a larger environment where several 2.5GbE clients must simultaneously transfer large amounts of data to servers on another switch, the single 2.5GbE uplink can become an aggregate bottleneck and a switch with 10GbE uplinks may be more suitable.

58. Why is my 2.5GbE device only connecting at 1Gbps?

Check that both endpoints support 2.5GbE, the network adapter is configured correctly and you are using good-quality Cat5e or better cabling. Damaged pairs, poor wall terminations, old patch leads, driver settings or a 1GbE router/NAS port can all cause the connection to negotiate at 1Gbps instead.

59. Why is my PoE device connected but not receiving power?

Confirm that the device supports IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at or 802.3bt rather than proprietary passive PoE. Check the Ethernet cable, the device's maximum power requirement and the combined PoE load of all connected equipment. If the total planned load approaches 230W, disconnect other PoE devices temporarily and retest.

60. Who is the D-Link DMS-108P best for, and who should choose another switch?

The DMS-108P is particularly suitable for home labs, small businesses, Wi-Fi 6/6E/7 access-point deployments, high-power PoE devices, IP cameras, PTZ cameras, 2.5GbE NAS systems and users who want eight Multi-Gigabit PoE ports without configuration or fan noise.

Choose another switch if you require VLAN configuration, LACP, port mirroring, Spanning Tree management, SSH/web administration, a 10GbE/SFP+ uplink, more than eight ports or more than 230W of total PoE capacity. A managed Multi-Gigabit model such as the DMS-1100-10TP is better suited to networks requiring advanced control.
