FAQ: Frequently Asked Question

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

1) How fast is the WD Green SN3000 1TB?
Up to 5,000 MB/s read and 4,200 MB/s write (sequential). Actual performance varies by system and workload.
2) What NAND does it use, and what’s the endurance?
It uses Western Digital QLC 3D NAND. The 1TB model is rated for 150 TBW (terabytes written) and carries a 3-year limited warranty.
3) Will it fit my laptop/mini PC? Is it single-sided?
Yes — this drive is a single-sided M.2 2280 module with a max height of about 2.38 mm, improving fit in thin laptops and SFF PCs.
4) Is it backwards-compatible with PCIe 3.0 motherboards?
Yes. PCIe 4.0 SSDs work in PCIe 3.0 slots (they’ll just run at PCIe 3.0 speeds).
5) Will it work in a PlayStation 5?
Sony recommends M.2 Gen4 x4 SSDs with at least 5,500 MB/s read and a heatsink. The SN3000’s rated read is 5,000 MB/s, so it doesn’t meet the recommended spec and isn’t advised for PS5 internal storage.
6) Is a heatsink required?
For desktops, use your motherboard’s M.2 heatsink if available or a low-profile one for sustained heavy workloads. For laptops, follow the laptop manufacturer’s guidance; many thin notebooks don’t have room for extra heatsinks. (No heatsink is listed in the SN3000 spec.)
7) Does it support cloning/migration software?
Yes — WD provides Acronis® True Image™ for Western Digital (download) to migrate from your old drive.
8) Is this good for everyday use and light gaming?
Yes — the SN3000 delivers quick boots, app launches and smooth general use. For heavier workloads (constant large writes), consider drives with higher endurance/throughput.
9) Can I use it in an external USB enclosure?
You can, but speeds will be limited by the USB bridge and enclosure interface rather than PCIe 4.0. Choose a quality NVMe enclosure (USB 3.2 Gen 2/2x2 or Thunderbolt) for best results.
10) What are the exact model numbers?
1TB: WDS100T4G0E (series: WD Green SN3000). Other capacities: WDS500G4G0E (500GB), WDS200T4G0E (2TB).
11) Does it support hardware encryption (TCG Opal/AES-256)?
Hardware encryption isn’t listed in the SN3000 datasheet/specs. If you require Opal, consider WD models that explicitly advertise it (e.g., some WD_BLACK variants).
12) What makes it different from WD Blue/Black?
WD Green SN3000 targets value/essentials with QLC NAND and solid Gen4 reads. WD Blue lines aim at mid-range productivity, and WD_BLACK drives focus on high-performance gaming/workstation use.
13) Any install tips?
Update your BIOS, insert the drive at a ~30° angle into an M.2 NVMe (Key-M) slot, secure the screw, then initialize/format in OS. For OS migration, use the Acronis tool from WD.
14) What about features like nCache™ 4.0?
The SN3000 leverages Western Digital nCache™ 4.0 (dynamic SLC caching) to help maintain snappy responsiveness under typical client workloads.
