FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

TP-Link TL-WR802N — FAQ

What is the TL-WR802N?
A pocket-size Wireless-N (N300, 2.4 GHz) travel router for hotel Wi-Fi, apartment sharing, or temporary setups. It supports Router, Hotspot/WISP, Range Extender, Client (Wi-Fi-to-Ethernet), and Access Point modes.
What Wi-Fi speed does it support?
Up to 300 Mb/s on 2.4 GHz (802.11n). Real throughput depends on environment, clients, and interference.
Does it have 5 GHz or AC/AX (Wi-Fi 5/6/7)?
No. The WR802N is 2.4 GHz-only (Wi-Fi 4/802.11n). If you need dual-band AC with USB modem support, consider TP-Link’s WR902AC.
Can it handle hotel Wi-Fi with a captive portal?
Yes—use Hotspot (WISP) mode to connect the WR802N to the hotel SSID, complete the web popup/portal once, then connect your devices to the WR802N’s private SSID.
What ports and power does it use?
1× 10/100 WAN/LAN (acts as WAN in Router mode, LAN in other modes) and Micro-USB 5 V/1 A power. You can power it from a phone charger, laptop USB, or a power bank.
Can I plug in a USB 3G/4G dongle?
No. The USB is only for power. (Use the WR902AC if you need USB-modem support.)
Can it bridge Wi-Fi to a wired-only device (TV/console)?
Yes—set Client mode to join your Wi-Fi and feed internet out of the Ethernet port to a wired device.
Does it support Guest Network and WPA2 security?
Yes—Guest SSID can be enabled, and it supports WPA/WPA2-PSK (and legacy WEP for old devices).
How big is it?
Ultra-compact: about 57 × 57 × 18 mm, ~57 g—easy to pocket with your travel adapter.
Troubleshooting: captive portal won’t appear
Make sure you’re in WISP mode, connect to the hotel SSID, then browse to a plain http site to trigger the portal. If it still won’t load, temporarily disable VPN/DoH, try a different DNS, or reboot router and client.
