FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ: Ring Alarm Motion Detector (2nd Gen)
1) What is it and what does it work with?
Ring’s Motion Detector (2nd Gen) is a battery-powered PIR motion sensor for Ring Alarm systems. It connects to the Alarm Base Station over Z-Wave and triggers your alarm or sends alerts when motion is detected. It does not pair to Ring doorbells/cameras directly.
2) Will it work with my Ring Alarm kit (including Alarm Pro)?
Yes. The 2nd-gen Motion Detector works with Ring Alarm (all kits) including Ring Alarm Pro via the Base Station.
3) Is it indoor or outdoor?
It’s designed for indoor use only. Install away from heat sources, windows with direct sun, or moving airflow to reduce false alarms.
4) What batteries does it use and how long do they last?
Power is 2× AA 1.5V batteries. Typical life varies with motion activity and signal strength; the Ring app will notify you when they need replacing.
5) How high should I mount it, and can I corner-mount?
Ring suggests mounting about 7 ft 6 in (2.3 m) high. You can mount flat on a wall or in a corner; the included bracket/adhesive make either easy.
6) Does it have pet immunity? How big can my pet be?
Yes—Pet Mode reduces alerts from small pets when installed correctly. Guidance commonly targets smaller pets (up to ~15 kg / 33 lb) and proper height/angle to avoid looking directly at stairways/furniture animals climb. Always test your room after installation.
7) What’s the detection area like?
It uses a wide-angle PIR suited to rooms and hallways. For best results, place it so people walk across the sensor’s view (not straight toward it), and avoid pointing at windows/heat sources.
8) How do I reduce false alarms?
Mount at the recommended height, aim across expected movement, keep away from vents/windows, and use Pet Mode / Motion Sensitivity in the Ring app. Re-test after furniture changes.
9) How do I set it up?
In the Ring app, go to Set Up a Device → Security → Sensors, scan the QR code on the sensor, pull the battery tab, and follow the prompts. Use the included adhesive or screws to mount.
10) What’s the wireless range to my Base Station?
It uses Z-Wave; practical range depends on walls and interference. Ring quotes long line-of-sight range for Alarm components, and you can add a Ring Range Extender to cover bigger homes.
11) Can I set different modes (Home/Away) or bypass rooms?
Yes—configure motion responses per Mode (Home/Away/Disarmed) and Bypass individual sensors as needed in the Ring app.
12) Does it have tamper detection?
Yes. Removing the cover/bracket triggers a tamper event you’ll see in the app and, depending on settings, during arming.
13) How do I reset or re-add it if I change my network/Base Station?
Use the Ring app’s Remove/Factory Reset flow for the sensor, then re-add it like new. If needed, follow the support steps for a manual reset and re-inclusion.
14) What are the physical specs?
The 2nd-gen detector is compact and lightweight, powered by 2× AA batteries, with clean white housing and a low-profile mount that fits most interiors.
