FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is this a Blu-ray burner or reader?
It’s a Blu-ray combo: reads Blu-ray (BD/BDXL), and burns DVD±R/RW/RAM and CD-R/RW. It does not burn Blu-ray media.
2) What are the max speeds?
- Blu-ray read: up to 6× (BD/BD-R/BD-RE; BDXL supported).
- DVD read: up to 8×; DVD write: up to 8× (incl. ±R/±RW, RAM).
- CD read/write: up to 24×.
3) Does it support BDXL and M-DISC?
Yes—BDXL (100/128 GB) reading is supported; and M-DISC reading is listed (BD-R SL, DVD+R SL). As a combo drive, Blu-ray writing isn’t supported.
4) Will it work with Windows and macOS?
Yes—ASUS lists Windows 11/10/8/8.1 and macOS (10.6+) compatibility. Playback/burning features depend on your software.
5) Is playback/burning software included?
Retail packages commonly include CyberLink Power2Go 8 (Windows) plus backup utilities. On macOS you’ll use third-party apps for DVD/CD burning and Blu-ray playback (if licensed).
6) Does it need external power or a Y-cable?
It’s USB-powered. ASUS recommends using the bundled USB Y-cable (two USB-A plugs to your computer) if a single port doesn’t supply enough power. A powered hub can help on some systems.
7) What connector/interface does it use?
USB 2.0 (Type-A). Use a USB-C adapter if your laptop only has USB-C ports.
8) Can it play commercial Blu-ray movie discs?
Yes, the hardware can read them; you’ll need compatible playback software that supports Blu-ray and appropriate codecs/DRM on your OS. (Windows bundles vary; macOS requires third-party software.)
9) Can I burn DVDs and CDs? Which formats?
Yes—DVD±R/±RW, DVD-RAM up to 8×, and CD-R/RW up to 24× are supported.
10) Does it support region coding?
Like most optical drives, Blu-ray/DVD region codes apply at the OS/player level. You can change the drive region a limited number of times; use your playback software’s region settings.
11) What are the dimensions—will it fit in a bag?
Approx. 157 × 140 × 18.5 mm (slim, portable) with a detachable stand for vertical use.
12) What’s in the box?
Drive, USB Y-cable, stand, and software bundle (Windows). Contents can vary by region/retailer—check the listing.
13) Any tips if the drive isn’t recognized or spins down under load?
- Plug both USB-A connectors of the Y-cable into your computer.
- Try different USB ports (avoid unpowered hubs).
- If bus power is weak, use a powered USB hub or a desktop USB port.
14) Is it good for ripping/archiving?
For DVD/CD ripping and data backup, it’s solid. For Blu-ray archiving, remember it’s a reader; to burn Blu-ray, choose an ASUS SBW model (e.g., SBW-06D2X-U) that writes BD/BDXL.
